At Northern Equine Therapy Centre, we specialise in providing comprehensive rehabilitation services for horses recovering from injury, surgery, or time off. Paddy, a talented young racehorse, arrived with us following a tendon injury that put his career on hold. With a carefully structured programme, our goal is to get him back to peak fitness and ultimately return him to racing.
Currently on box rest, Paddy's rehabilitation is in its early stages, focusing on reducing inflammation, promoting healing, and maintaining muscle tone while his tendon repairs. These first weeks are crucial, and our team is providing a combination of physiotherapy, laser therapy, and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy to give him the best start.
Physiotherapy: Keeping the Body Strong During Box Rest
While Paddy's movement is restricted for now, physiotherapy is essential to prevent secondary issues such as muscle wastage and stiffness. Regular hands-on sessions focus on maintaining mobility in his joints, improving circulation, and keeping his muscles engaged. This ensures he remains in the best possible condition before we begin reintroducing controlled exercise.
Laser Therapy: Accelerating Tendon Healing
Tendon injuries require time and careful management, but we can support and stimulate tissue repair with laser therapy. This treatment increases circulation, reduces inflammation, and encourages the formation of strong, healthy tendon fibres. Paddy receives targeted laser therapy sessions along his injured tendon to aid healing at a deeper level than manual therapy alone.
PEMF Therapy: Enhancing Recovery at a Cellular Level
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy (PEMF) is another key element of Paddy's rehabilitation. By using electromagnetic fields to improve blood flow and stimulate cellular repair, PEMF therapy reduces pain, decreases swelling, and promotes efficient healing an, invaluable tool in managing tendon injuries.
Looking Ahead: The Next Stages
Paddy is responding well to his initial treatments, and as he progresses, we will introduce controlled in-hand walking before moving to swimming sessions in our equine pool. Swimming allows Paddy to build strength and fitness without placing excess strain on his healing tendon. This is just one of the many rehabilitation therapies we offer to ensure horses make a complete and safe return to work.
More Than Just Hydrotherapy
At Northern Equine Therapy Centre, we provide far more than hydrotherapy. Our expert team offers a full range of rehabilitation services, including physiotherapy, electrotherapy, manual therapies, and strength-building programmed tailored to each horse as needs. Whether a horse is recovering from injury, surgery, or simply needs conditioning, we create bespoke rehabilitation plans designed for long-term soundness and success.
Paddy's journey is just beginning, but with expert care and a tailored rehabilitation programme, we're confident he will be back doing what he loves most racing. Stay tuned for updates on his progress!
